Week Three Quarterback Power Rankings

Just like the first two weeks of the season, Week 3 in the NFL saw a lot of upsets and surprising results from quarterbacks. Check out the two quarterbacks who dropped out of the top ten, the first rookie to make the list, and who the new number is one.

Power rankings are based on this week's and previous week's performances.

10. Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams

Last Week: Unranked

The Los Angeles Rams were on the verge of starting their season 0-3. They were down 14-0 early in the first quarter, down 14 points late in the third quarter, and trailed by 10 points with under seven minutes left to go. That was until Matthew Stafford and Co. marched down into San Francisco territory on three straight possessions to win on a last-second field goal.

In the comeback, Stafford threw for 221 yards and one touchdown on 16-25 passing and a 105.6 rating. He ranks fifth in passing yards threw the first three weeks.

2024 Stats: 1-2 record, 68 completion percentage, 754 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and a 92.6 rating.

9. Derek Carr, New Orleans Saints

Derek Carr

Last Week: 1st

It was day and night for Derek Carr in weeks one and two compared to his Week 3 performance. After being the most efficient QB in the first two games and earning the number-one spot in last week’s rankings, the 33-year-old has found himself squeaking into the top 10.

Carr wasn’t able to get any big plays down the field and had to settle for a lot of small gains, making it hard to sustain long productive drives. After a 77% completion rate after Week 2, Carr only connected on 56% of passes for 142 yards. He also threw one touchdown and one interception and had a 69.1 rating, 73.3 less than his rating after the first two weeks.

His first two games were too good to keep him out of the top 10, but if he puts up another subpar outing against the Falcons then he will drop even further.

2024 Stats: 2-1 record, 69 completion percentage,  585 yards, seven total touchdowns, two interceptions, and a 115.7 rating.

8. Geno Smith, Seattle Seahawks

Last Week: 8th

The Seahawks move to 3-0 on the season and sit atop the NFC West and it is largely in part to their QB, Geno Smith. Just like in Week 2, Smith aired out a deep ball to DK Metcalf for a big touchdown, this time a 71-yard score.

Smith converted on 26 of 34 passes for 289 yards and a touchdown. He did throw two interceptions, one being a shovel pass that tipped off the hands of his running back and another that was deflected at the line of scrimmage.

2024 Stats: 3-0 record, 75 completion percentage, 787 passing yards, four total touchdowns, three interceptions, and a 93.8 rating

7. Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders

Jayden Daniels
Jayden Daniels

Last Week: Unranked

After being selected second overall in this year’s NFL Draft, Jayden Daniels has been the best rookie quarterback through three weeks and is the first one to crack the top 10. Daniels led the Commanders to a gritty Week 2 win against the Giants where the team only kicked field goals. This past week was a little different. The Commanders' offense tore up the Bengals’ defense and it was led by the 2023 Heisman winner.

Daniels did it in the air as well as on the ground. He threw for 254 yards on 91% throwing with two passing touchdowns. He also tacked on a team-leading 39 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. He had the second-highest rating this week with 141.7.

He spread the ball around to eight different receivers, one being an offensive tackle. Daniels and the Commanders scored on every offensive drive, excluding kneel-downs before the half and at the end of the game. This is the second time Washington has done that this season.

Long drives and protecting the football may be the key for the Commanders to surprise the league this season. If Daniels can keep it up, he may find himself in the top 5 sooner rather than later.

2024 Stats: 2-1 record, league-leading 80 completion percentage, 835 total yards, five total touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a 111.8 rating.

6. Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals

Kyler Murray

Last Week: 4th

After an incredible Week 2 performance, Kyler Murray cooled down against Detroit. The Lions secondary played the Cardinals' receivers very tight making it hard for Murray to complete passes. It forced many contested 50/50 balls that went in Detroit's favor most of the time. His biggest blunder came early in the third quarter when the sixth-year QB launched the ball into double coverage, resulting in a pick when the Cardinals were driving in enemy territory.

Even in a shaky game, Kyler still had some positives come out. He connected with rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr for a 10-yard score. The duo has now linked up for three touchdowns in the last two games. Second-year receiver, Michael Wilson, snagged a career-high eight catches for 64 yards. Murray was also effective in the running game with 5 carries and a team-high 45 yards.

2024 Stats: 1-2 record, 67 completion percentage, 796 total yards, five touchdowns, one interception, and a 104.6 rating.

5. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals

Joe Burrow
Joe Burrow

Last Week: 10th

The Bengals may be 0-3, but Joe Burrow is far from the reason why. After not looking 100% in Week 1 with a lingering wrist injury, Burrow has been throwing the ball as well as anyone in the league.

Burrow and former LSU teammate, Ja’Marr Chase, connected for two long touchdowns. The Bengals quarterback also threw a touchdown to Andrei Iosivas, his third enzone trip of the season. In the shocking primetime loss to the Commanders, Burrow finished with 29-38 throwing, 324 yards, the third most yards in Week 3, three touchdowns, and a 127.5 rating.

Cincinnati is in must-win mode going forward. The good news is Burrow looks healthy and Chase knocked off any rust he had from not attending practice this offseason.

2024 Stats: 0-3 record, 71 completion percentage, 746 yards, five touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a 107.5 rating.

4. Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers

Brock Purdy

Last Week: 9th

In his third year in the league, Brock Purdy’s respect as a top QB continues to be hindered by the playmakers around him. However, he may have silenced all the doubters this week, or at least some.

No McCaffrey, no Kittle, no Deebo, no problem for Mr. Irrelevent. Whether he was doing it from the pocket or scrambling, Purdy was efficient throughout the entire game. He relied on Juan Jennings for half of his completions as the two hooked up for 11 catches, 175 yards, and three touchdowns.

In the 27-24 loss, Purdy completed 73% of his passes for 292 yards, three touchdowns, and a 137.1 rating. He also ran for 41 yards, the second-most rushing yards in a game throughout his career. Expect Purdy’s numbers to climb when his teammates come back healthy.

2024 Stats: 1-2 record, 73 completion percentage, 842 yards, four touchdowns, one interception, and a 109.2 rating.

3. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens

Lamar Jackson
Lamar Jackson

Last Week: 6th

Lamar Jackson didn’t have to do much in the 28-25 win over the Dallas Cowboys, but when he had to do something, he was nearly perfect. The impact of Derrick Henry was huge for Jackson as it opened up option plays and one-on-one coverages.

Last year’s MVP converted on 80% of his throws for 182 yards and a touchdown. He had an outstanding 15.2 yards per completion. He used his legs as well running for 87 yards and a touchdown on 14 attempts. When Lamar is throwing the ball as well as he did versus Dallas and is as effective in the ground game, the Ravens are hard to beat.

2024 Stats: 1-2 record, 956 total yards, four total touchdowns, one interception, and a 95.7 rating.

2. Sam Darnold, Minnesota Vikings

Sam Darnold
Sam Darnold

Last Week: 2nd

The Cinderella run season for Sam Darnold continues as he holds the number two spot in back-to-back weeks.

Darnold and the Vikings embarrassed the Texans in a 34-7 rout. The chemistry between Justin Jefferson continues to grow as the pair have scored one touchdown in every game thus far. Not only did Jefferson find the endzone, but three other receivers as well.

The QB out of USC completed 17 of 28 passes for 181 yards and four touchdowns. He now has had a multi-score game in every contest and leads the league in eight passing touchdowns. He also had a rating of 119.2, the ninth highest in Week 3.

Darnold is doing this without one of the league’s top tight ends, TJ Hockenson, and a banged-up Jordan Addison. When Minnesota gets all its weapons back, Darnold will be able to take this offense to even higher heights.

2024 Stats: 3-0 record, 68 completion percentage, 657 yards, eight touchdowns, two interceptions, and a 117.3 rating.

1. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills

Josh Allen
Josh Allen

Last Week: 3rd

Josh Allen returns to the number one spot after a dominant Week 3 performance vs a disappointing Jaguars team.

Everything was clicking for the Bills’ offense on Monday Night and it starts with their leader. Allen led the Bills on quick and emphatic drives that led to touchdowns left and right. In the 47-10 beat down, Buffalo found the endzone six times, kicked two field goals, and only had to punt once.

Allen spread the ball out to 10 different receivers, four of them catching a touchdown pass from him. On top of his 23-30 throwing, 263 yards, four scores, and Week 3 leading 142.1 rating,  Allen rushed for a team-high 44 yards on just six carries. Even without a true number-one receiver, Allen looked unstoppable and picked apart the Jacksonville secondary.

Allen has been turnover-prone throughout his career. However, after throwing the second most interceptions last year with 18, he has yet to throw a pick in 2024. He hasn't missed many throws throughout the first three weeks as he sits second in the league in completion percentage.

2024 Stats: 3-0 record, 75 completion percentage, 719 total yards, nine total touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a league-leading 133.7 rating.
