Why The New York Giants Were Eliminated From Making 2024/25 NFL Playoffs
Well, that was a Thanksgiving game. The New York Giants lost to the Dallas Cowboys 27-20. It gets worse, the New York Giants are the first NFL team to be mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Well it's not surprising and the season was long over for the Giants, but it's still a disappointment. A lot went wrong for the New York Giants, but from the long list of problems, there are three key reasons why the Giants didn't make the playoffs.
3 The New York Giants Never Had A True Franchise QB
Let's be honest Giants fans, the Giants did not have a true franchise QB on the team from Week 1. Daniel Jones has been a 6-year project that has not worked out. The only reason why the Giants had to start him is due to that gigantic contract. Jones just is not it and when he started, he was very inaccurate. When the Giants saw the light and the writing on the wall, the Giants had to move on. Jones was benched and was demoted as a 4th string QB. When Jones requested his release, it was granted and the Giants moved on.
The Giants tried with Tommy DeVito but he was awful against the Buccaneers and is currently dealing with a forearm injury. Drew Lock looked terrible against Dallas. The other option is Tim Boyle and we all know how much of a scrub the dude is. It's amazing how he is still in the NFL. No matter what team you have in the NFL, you can't win unless you have competent QB play and the Giants did not have any.
2 Failed Past Draft Classes (Including 2022 and 2023 Draft Class)
I have not been a tremendous fan of the current Giants' GM Joe Schoen. The signings and free agent decisions have not been great, however, his drafting the past few years has been really terrible. Those poor picks have affected the Giants this season.
Relooking at his selections, the Giants missed a lot. The two Top 10 picks the Giants used in the 2022 NFL Draft have not looked great. Kayvon Thibodeaux has mainly been mediocre as a Giant and Evan Neal is so terrible as a blocker that they should cut him. The 2023 NFL Draft class has been a complete disaster and WTF happened to Deonte Banks. Dude was great in his rookie season and has been awful in his second season. Speaking of what happened to this player, remember when Jaylin Hyatt got a ton of hype last off-season. Has anybody ever seen this guy on the field this year, I think the Ghosts of Sam Darnold took him.
The 2022 and 2023 classes have been awful and contributed to this team not making the playoffs. This was the year for those classes to stand out, and they just haven't. At least the 2024 NFL Draft class has potential.
1. Hate To Say It, This Team Needs A New Head Coach
I have been supportive of Brian Daboll for many weeks, but after watching how this team has quit the past few weeks, it is time to fire him. It doesn't help that the locker room is fractured and I don't see how it can be repaired with Daboll as the coach. Here is the most damming thing against Daboll. This year's offense is one of the worst offenses the New York Giants have had in 25 years. They even have a league-worst 14.8 points per game offense too. Daboll is an offensive coach, and they have gotten progressively worse. The Giants must change the coaching staff when this season ends and start from scratch.
On The Bright Side - The Giants Currently Hold the 1st Overall Pick
With how disappointing this season has gone, it's hard to find a positive. You can argue that the Giants may have something in Tyrone Tracey at running back and Dru Philips is solid in the secondary. However, according to Tankathon, if the season ended today, the Giants would hold the 1st Overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. No matter where the Giants pick in this draft, they're going to take a QB. There is no chance the Giants can win with Tommy DeVito or Drew Lock as the starting QB. Embrace the tank Giants fans - you're going to need to ensure you get that pick.
