Why The Pittsburgh Steelers Are Super Bowl Contenders

The Pittsburgh Steelers were always Super Bowl contenders each season during the 2010s decade. However, the team has not had much playoff success since the retirement of future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The roster has been built pretty well, and the team went 10-7 in 2023, but nobody expected Pittsburgh to do much, especially with struggles at quarterback.

But after a complete turnaround this off-season and an excellent draft, this year might be different for the six-time Super Bowl champions. Here's why the Pittsburgh Steelers could be Super Bowl contenders in this upcoming NFL season.

The Steelers Completely Upgrade Its Quarterback Room

As mentioned, the Pittsburgh Steelers had a complete turnaround this off-season, especially in the quarterback room. After entering the off-season with 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett, former Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky, and 2018 third-round pick Mason Rudolph, all three are now on different teams.

Instead, the Steelers traded for 2021 first-round pick quarterback Justin Fields and signed recently released Broncos quarterback and future Hall of Famer Russell Wilson. These players are enormous additions and bring more mobility and success in the passing game.

Whether they go with the former Ohio State quarterback in Fields, who once threw 41 touchdown passes in one season, or the Seahawks legend Wilson, who was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL each year before being traded to Denver Broncos, the Steelers should have an improved passing game.

The Steelers Had One Of The Best NFL Draft Classes

The Steelers had one of the best draft classes in the 2024 NFL Draft. The front office's main focus was to upgrade the offensive line, which is fundamental to the success of the NFL's running and passing game.

Pittsburgh's offense will improve in 2024 after upgrading its offensive line with first-round pick Troy Fashanu and drafting Michigan receiver Roman Wilson. On the defensive side of the ball, Pittsburgh also drafted one of the best linebackers, Payton Wilson, in the third round.

With an already elite defense, a respected coach in Mike Tomlin, and an offense on the rise, the Steelers have a good chance at winning their first playoff game since 2017 and even making a Super Bowl run.
