Will The Minnesota Vikings Cut This Former First Round Pick?
Organized team activities, also known as OTAs, are underway for teams throughout the NFL, including Minnesota. This is not only the first look at rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy and rookie linebacker Dallas Turner, but it's also a chance for the team to evaluate its existing talent pool as the 2024 season approaches.
Multiple reports from the Vikings' practice indicate that one player, in particular, could be at risk of getting cut when the team makes roster decisions later this summer.
Could The Vikings Cut Lewis Cine?
Minnesota drafted safety Lewis Cine with the final pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. After just 34 special teams snaps in his rookie season, the former Georgia Bulldog suffered a broken leg, which required surgery, and ended his first year as a professional football player.
Cine returned to the team last offseason but still struggled to find playing time in the Vikings' secondary, playing only eight defensive snaps and 84 special teams snaps, per Pro Football Reference.
As Will Ragatz of Fan Nation reported, the 24-year-old has had a rough start to his third NFL offseason. He has been beaten in coverage multiple times and dropped a potential interception.
It's hard to judge Lewis Cine because he hasn't seen much playing time in the league. But there's got to be a reason for that. Kevin O'Connell and Brian Flores seemingly don't love what they see from him at practice; therefore, he's not on the field on game day.
With Cam Bynum and Theo Jackson ahead of him on the depth chart, it seems that the Vikings could move on from Cine sooner rather than later.
