Yankees Suffer Embarrassing Loss To The Abysmal Chicago White Sox
Nobody would have expected the New York Yankees to suffer what may be their worst loss of the season so far. The New York Yankees took repeated punches to their throat in a 12 to 2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
Did The Yankees Just Lose To The Worst Team In Baseball?
This loss follows the White Sox's coming off of their worst losing streak in franchise history and one of the worst in modern baseball. The White Sox dropped 21 consecutive games before breaking the streak against the Oakland A’s last week.
A critical issue for the Yankees in this game was their inability to score with runners on base, leaving 16 players stranded on base throughout the game. With a dismal 2-for-18 performance with runners in scoring position, the Yankees failed to generate any signs of offense. Despite the White Sox starting pitcher Ky Bush issuing seven walks and allowing six hits over 4 ²/₃ innings, the Yankees could only come up two runs, frequently succumbing to pop-ups.
Yanks Just Can't Hit
The Yankees' hitting issues are evident, raising questions about the effectiveness of their hitting coaches. While Aaron Judge's success with his hitting coach has resulted in over 40 home runs thus far, it highlights the disparities in the team's overall hitting strategy.
The New York Yankees had an early chance to score big when Alex Verdugo was walked with the bases loaded in the second inning. Juan Soto was poised to deliver a grand slam, but instead hit a pop fly to the outfield. Similarly, Aaron Judge had the same opportunity to hit the grand slam and give the Yankees an early lead. Unfortunately, Judge fell just short of hitting his 300th career home run, a moment that would have undoubtedly electrified Yankees fans.
The hiring of James Rowson in the 2023 off-season, who advocates for players developing their hitting approaches, has yet to yield positive results during the challenging summer stretch.
Tough Outing By Gil And De Los Santos
Pitcher Luis Gil struggled through 98 pitches over four innings, allowing four runs. The Yankees bullpen, expected to salvage the game, faltered significantly. The new acquisition of Enyel De Los Santos allowed seven runs during the seventh and eighth innings, with six runs occurring in the seventh alone.
Jazz Spices Up The Crowd But Leaves With Injury
Jazz Chisholm Jr tried to fire things up for the clubhouse and scored a run after running to first base off a Volpe single, but exited the game in the bottom of the seventh inning due to a left elbow injury. Fortunately, x-rays were negative, but the extent of his injury remains uncertain.
Volpe's Sophomore Slump
Anthony Volpe's performance has been underwhelming, enduring an 0-for-20 slump before managing a hit and two walks in three at-bats against the White Sox. His struggles may be attributed to an ankle injury sustained during last week's Los Angeles Angels series. According to MLB.com, Volpe’s OPS stands at .689, ranking him 14th among shortstops, a stark contrast to Bobby Witt Jr.'s leading OPS of 1.003. Volpe's early-season batting prowess has waned, raising concerns as the Yankees approach the postseason.
Despite numerous setbacks this summer, Yankees fans remain hopeful that this loss will serve as a much-needed wake-up call, inspiring a late-season turnaround.
