WWE brought back Saturday Night’s Main Event this weekend. A solid card from top to bottom with the biggest complaint being most of the matches felt cut short. Check out the breakdown of how we got this rating.
Drew McIntyre Vs Sami Zayn 4.25/5 Stars
Overall this felt like a great match that didn’t get booked to go long enough. Drew McIntyre would win via pinfall after hitting a Claymore.
Storytelling 4/5 Stars
This had some good storytelling in the buildup and in the match. They had some promo’s on Raw leading up to the event with McIntyre blindsiding Zayn on the latest episode. The match also had some decent storytelling with the larger Drew McIntyre being strong and dominant with Sami hitting some reversals for nice false finishes. They could have told a better story with a little more time both in the match and buildup.
Wrestling And Flow 4/5 Stars
McIntyre was strong early and Zayn certainly didn’t need to put in much extra to sell it. Both men also had some smooth reversals with a good pace throughout.
Athleticism 4/5 Stars
Drew McIntyre would start this off with some acts of strength most people on the roster could not replicate. Sami Zayn also put up some quick and smooth wrestling while legitimately taking a beating.
Intensity 4.5/5 Stars
These boys started out hot and McIntyre was laying it in thick early including strikes, power moves and even launching Zayn over the announce desk. Zayn would be quick and snappy in his reversals and comeback attempts while battling through genuine punishment.
Iyo Sky Vs Liv Morgan 3.5/5 Stars
Iyo Sky brought the heat and made sure Liv Morgan took her bumps on the way to retaining her championship. This match was Iyo Sky showing off her superior ability and abusing Liv the whole time only for her to use one reversal with one finisher for the victory.
Storytelling 3/5 Stars
These two have certainly had their run-ins but Liv’s main story still seems to be with Rhea Ripley. The match itself had very little story outside of Iyo being dominant only to get pinned after being hit by two moves.
Wrestling And Flow 3.5/5 Stars
Iyo earned every half star in that rating. Even without much fightback she was able to keep the pace up while executing nice high-spots and striking.
Athleticism 4/5 Stars
Not to repeat myself but with Liv Morgan only hitting two moves it’s hard to give this a higher rating. Iyo’s move-set and pace were fantastic.
Intensity 3.5/5 Stars
Iyo Sky did not let up for the entirety of the match. You could tell by the look on Liv’s face at the end that she had enough of the pace and stiff work.
Finn Balor Vs Damian Priest Vs Gunther 4.5/5 Stars
This was a fantastic match that had stiff work, great storytelling, crazy spots and much more. If I could change one thing it would be the trend of the evening of the matches feeling cut short.
Storytelling 5/5 Stars
This match had plenty of deep storyline going into it including Damian Priest dropping the title to Gunther, Gunther being booked to look weak for the first time, Finn Balor with The Judgment Day and much more. They also did a great job with the match itself making good use of the triple-threat format.
Wrestling And Flow 4.5/5 Stars
All three men did a great job keeping the triple-threat interesting and not just having one guy hurt on the outside waiting. The match itself had stiff striking and power moves combined with nice false finishes often interrupted by the third guy.
Athleticism 4/5 Stars
While it didn’t present anything you haven’t seen from these three before the match still had great power and athletic spots.
Intensity 4.5/5 Stars
They all came in hot from the start with stiff strikes and powermoves. Using steel steps for a spot with plenty of chops, powerbombs and more.
Chelsea Green Vs Michin 3.75/5 Stars
Overall the story overshadowed the match itself. They did a great job booking the tournament and building up this championship. Chelsea Green is also an unexpected but deserving choice. The match itself wasn’t bad but you also didn’t miss anything outside of crowning the inaugural champion.
Storytelling 4.5/5 Stars
With an intensive tournament leading up to this final we had to give this a high rating. I also predicted both finalized incorrectly which is actually refreshing. To get that last half star the match would have to have been just a little more interesting.
Wrestling And Flow 3/5 Stars
This match was very average when discussing the bell-to-bell action. Nothing fantastic but a solid enough performance.
Athleticism 3.5/5 Stars
They certainly had a few spots that your average joe couldn’t pull off but it also lacked anything memorable.
Intensity 3.5/5 Stars
For being the finals to crown the inaugural WWE Women’s United States Champion they could have gone a little harder to be honest. They didn’t mail in the performance but I’m not sure we can say they left it all in the ring either.
Kevin Owens Vs Cody Rhodes 4.25/5 Stars
While at surface level this is a fantastic match it really lacked the intensity promised in the buildup.
Storytelling 5/5 Stars
This had some deep storylines leading up to including the heel-turn from Kevin Owens which was brought on by Cody teaming with former sworn enemy Roman Reigns. The match also had some nice storytelling with the referee being distracted on two separate occasions only for Cody Rhodes to win in non-babyface fashion by using the chair to help him win.
Wrestling And Flow 4/5 Stars
Both guys looked good and it had a good general flow. Plenty of believable false finishes but the improved reversals could have improved the score.
Athleticism 4/5 Stars
Kevin Owens would look good including some smooth Swanton Bombs and Cody Rhodes did his normal routine but looked sharp with extra jump in his boots.
Intensity 4/5 Stars
While it certainly was intense it lacked the expected next level. Especially considering they let Kevin Owens used the banned Piledriver leading up to it.
We hope you enjoyed WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event and our breakdown and rating system.
