After a controversial game in the Champions League, Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois has responded to Atletico Madrid complaining about the referees’ performance.
Courtois responded harshly after his team managed to beat Atletico Madrid in their Champions League clash.
Controversy Surrounding Real Madrid And Atletico Madrid’s UCL Match
The UCL match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid was a close fight, as the two sides tried to gain dominance over the other.
The game ended with Real Madrid winning through penalties. This came after Julian Alvarez’s penalty was disallowed due to “double kick.”
Atletico Madrid’s Response To The Penalty Decision
After the match, Atletico Madrid’s head coach, Diego Simeone, criticized the referee’s decision to review Alvarez’s penalty.
Simeone claimed that Alvarez didn’t do a “double kick” when taking the penalty. However, UEFA published a statement explaining the decision.
What Did Courtois Say?
Following Simeone’s claims, and his dissatisfaction with the referee, Courtois slammed Atletico Madrid’s “victimhood.” He told the media:
“I’m always fed up with that victimhood, always crying over things like that. Referees don’t want to benefit a team, neither in Spain nor in Europe; they saw it clearly, and they called it that way. They’re human, and with technology, they saw it clearly. If you’re winning 1-0 in the first minute and don’t go for the second, that’s the fault of their game.”
He also talked about how Real Madrid didn’t play their best game.
“In the end, it was a lottery. I felt like it was a double, and I told the referee. It’s not easy to see, and it’s bad luck for them. Then it was bad luck for me that Correa didn’t get it out. We didn’t play our best game, but we got through, and that’s what matters.”
The Hypocrisy Of Courtois And Real Madrid
Courtois supporting the referees now feels like hypocrisy. For weeks, Real Madrid have complained about the referees and how their decisions were unjust.
Now that the referees are ruling in their favor, the referees are suddenly good and should be defended? Courtois shouldn’t have made this statement, especially since fans saw how hypocritical it is.
End Of My Real Madrid Rant
Real Madrid’s next Champions League match will be against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. It will be an exciting match for sure, and hopefully no refereeing controversies will happen.
