Here are the SEC women’s basketball power rankings after week one of league play for the 2024-25 season:
SEC Top Contenders
1. South Carolina:
The reigning national champions are still going strong, returning nearly everyone from last year’s squad, including sophomore MiLaysia Fulwiley, and adding No. 2 recruit Joyce Edwards. The Gamecocks ended week one 2-0 but struggled in the first half against Miss St before putting them away in the second. Forward Ashlyn Watkins was injured in her last game and was announced today she was out for the year with a torn ACL. The Gamecocks will depend on Chloe Kitts much more.
Up next: Home vs Texas A&M and a big top-five showdown hosting Texas on Sunday.
2. Texas:
With a healthy roster, the Longhorns are a force to be reckoned with, boasting sophomore All-American Madison Booker and fifth-year coach Vic Schaefer’s veteran talent additions. The Longhorns began SEC play with a tough top-ten win over Oklahoma on the road, sitting at 2-0. Taylor Jones and Rori Harman are key pieces on a team with high expectations.
Up next: 2 ranked matchups this week, home versus Alabama and on the road to take on South Carolina
3. LSU:
The Tigers have a new-look lineup without post-player Angel Reese. However, veterans Aneesah Morrow and Flau’jae Johnson are leading the charge, alongside transfer additions Shayeann Day-Wilson and Kailyn Gilbert. Morrow is a double-double machine. At 2-0, the Tigers opened SEC play with impressive wins over Arkansas and Auburn.
Up next: Tough road game at #16 Tennessee on Thursday and home versus Vanderbilt on Sunday.
Middle Of The Pack
4. Oklahoma:
The Sooners return all five starters and added Oregon State transfer Raegan Beers, making them a deep and experienced team. A brutal home loss over #5 Texas and hanging on at #16 Tennessee for the one-point win has the Sooners 1-1. Still ahead of the pack in the middle tier on talent and experience.
Up next: Plays at Mississippi State on Thurs and home to take on Texas A&M on Sunday.
5. Kentucky:
The Wildcats have a new coach in Kenny Brooks and brought All-American point guard Georgia Amoore and center Clara Strack with him. Adding Amelia Hassett from JUCO, Dazia Lawrence from Charlotte, and Teonni Key from North Carolina has given them a dynamic starting five.
Kentucky begins SEC play by setting single-game three-point records and continuing that barrage on the road against two one-loss teams in Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. A 2-0 SEC start has them sitting pretty.
Up Next: A trip to Florida on Thursday and back home to take on the Auburn Tigers on Sunday.
6. Alabama:
The Crimson Tide brought back four of their top five scorers, including Sarah Ashlee Barker and Jessica Timmons, and added veteran talent from the transfer portal. Zaay Green leads the Tide in scoring and notched two wins in the opening week over Florida and Missouri. Ranked 18th in the country and one of five unblemished in the SEC through the first week.
Up next: A tough road matchup at top 5 Texas and on the road to Ole Miss.
7. Tennessee:
The new coach, Kim Caldwell, has given the volunteers a lot of depth, returning Jewel Spear and adding transfer additions to Ruby Whitehorn and Samara Spencer. A 13-0 season opening was snapped at home against Oklahoma this past Sunday. The Lady Vols secured the win on opening night at Texas A&M. With a 1-1 SEC record, I have them below Alabama despite a higher AP ranking.
Up next: They get sixth-ranked LSU Tigers at home on Thursday night and visit Arkansas on Sunday.
8. Mississippi:
The Rebels have a guard-heavy lineup led by seniors Madison Scott and KK Deans. Ranked early, they have gone through some ups and downs at 10-4 on the season. They won-handedly on opening night at Auburn but were upset on the road Sunday versus the Texas A&M Aggies.
Up next: They return home to take on Vanderbilt and #18 Alabama this week.
In The Mix For March Madness
