The Jets and Packers have finally agreed on a trade that will officially send quarterback Aaron Rodgers to New York. For the first time in his career, the four-time NFL MVP will leave Green Bay to play for a new team. The trade was announced late afternoon on Monday by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

New York will be moving back two spots in the first round of this year’s draft as part of the compensation for acquiring the long-time Green Bay signal-caller. The Jets also included two second-round picks, one being for this year, and the other being a conditional second-round selection in next year’s draft that could become a first if Rodgers were to play 65 percent of snaps in 2023.

With Rodgers likely to surpass the 65 percent threshold, when it’s all said and done, New York will more than likely be giving up a first-round pick in the deal. That seemed to be one of the major hold-ups in the trade and why it took this long to become official. The Jets had their concerns when Rodgers said on the Pat McAfee Show that he “went into the darkness 90% retiring, 10% playing.”

What It All Means For The Jets

Last year’s Jets team started off the 2022 campaign with a record of 7-4 before losing the last six games of the season due to poor and inconsistent quarterback play. New York hopes to bring some stability to the quarterback position in order to capitalize on their young offensive talent, along with attempting to repeat their top-five defensive performance from a year ago.

With the additions of former Packers wideout Allen Lazard and former Chiefs speedster Mecole Hardman, along with the departure of Elijah Moore, Aaron Rodgers will be joining a Jets offense that shook up their wide receiver room this offseason. New York will also be getting their lead ball carrier, Breece Hall, back from injury after a torn ACL ended his rookie season.

By the end of last season, Woody Johnson, Joe Douglas, and Robert Saleh all felt that they were a quarterback away from contending for a Super Bowl. Well, the New York brain trust has officially completed its goal, and now it’s time to see if the Jets can make that dream a reality by making the playoffs for the first time in 12 years. They have the talent, and now they have the QB. Can they put it all together?
