The Krafts didn’t even let Mayo get to black Monday; so much for establishing a culture in this last game. Mayo’s brief tenure as Head Coach of the Patriots was a disaster. He was continuously out-coached, unprepared for adjustments, and making blunders in the media, having to walk back several controversial statements. He was supposed to be this defensive-minded head coach, yet our defense was horrible and pathetically out-maneuvered.
Mayo’s Most Egregious Moments
On the field, none is worse than the decision not to go for two against the Titans after the Drake Maye miracle play; all the momentum was on the Patriots’ side just to kick the field goal to OT and lose almost immediately. Numerous end-of-half miscues that left wins on the board.
He said in the off-season that the Patriots were going to “burn cash,” and then the front office brought the same win-win team back to win another four games. He called Alex Van Pelt “Head Coach Offense” at the beginning of the season; then he called the team and organization soft after getting blown out overseas again.
Last week, Mayo said that Gibson would get the start against the Chargers to the broadcast teams during their production meetings, and Stevenson started. He noted that Maye outplayed Brissett in the preseason yet started Jacoby, who was not the better option for the team to win games like he said then.
What Is The Next Step For The Patriots?
New England must take it a step further and gut the front office. Elliot Wolf has been here for multiple years, and he may have just gotten the final say, but he has been helping draft choices since 2020, and if we are being honest, those results are pretty atrocious.
We will get into who should be the next Head Coach of the New England Patriots shortly, but this job is attractive with Wolf in place. Bringing their own GM with the same vision makes this a slam-dunk position. The Pats have Maye, who has some secondary weapons for him (need an actual number one). The offensive line needs an anchor, but there are some players with potential, but none track to be elite. That’s why having over $100 in cap space and a top 5 pick in each draft round is so important.
Who Could Be The Next HC Of The Patriots

This has Mike Vrabel written all over it. The Krafts don’t make moves like this without a plan (sometimes the plan is terrible). It makes too much sense to bring him back here, and he took Ryan Tannehill to the AFC Championship and out-coached Belichick multiple times.
Some may point to how it ended in Tennessee, but his roster had aged out. The GM traded AJ Brown for Treylon Burks, and he was replaced, and then injuries got to them. Vrabel could come in here with an experienced staff to build an authentic culture and a front office that can identify talent.
End Of My Patriots Rant
If I had my druthers, the Patriots would hire Vrabel. He would bring in Thomas Dimtrioff as the General Manager. Vrabel’s next move would be to hire Daboll as Offensive Coordinator (if he is fired) and Robert Saleh as Defensive Coordinator, and then this team is off to the races. They hit on free agents and the draft, and this is a playoff team next year with this leadership structure.
