For the past two seasons, the Green Bay Packers have lacked a super star wide receiver. Christan Watson has had his fair share of injuries, and the younger guys like Jayden Reed and Romeo Doubs have yet to take that next step. Luckily, a certain receiver is potentially on the trade market, and he’s more than familiar with the Wisconsin area. His name is Davante Adams, and he would be the perfect trade target for Green Bay.
Why Would The Packers Trade For A Reciever
On the surface, it may seem like the Packers don’t need anymore receivers. With loads of young talent and a well rounded receiver room, it could seem puzzling to go after another one. Looking deeper, however, and it is apparent that a true number one is much needed. While the entire receiving room preformed good, none of them reached over 1000 yards. With the age of those guys being so young, a veteran presence could provide instant benefits. Christian Watson is unfortunately slated to miss most of the upcoming season as well, leaving a hole in the position.
There has also been both internal and external pressure to get a true WR1. Packers fans have been clamoring for the team to go after a superstar for the past three seasons, but have had no luck in doing so. Internally, players are also seeming to recognize a need for a WR1. For example, Josh Jacobs, had high praise for the young receiver room, but reiterated that a real receiver one is crucial for success. He made this statement when interviewed by Kay Adams on Radio Row:
“We need a wide receiver — a real wide receiver, Love the guys we have but we need a proven No. 1.”
While Jacobs stirred the pot in the locker room, the truth is he’s right. The Packers offense would be much more dangerous and versatile if defenses had to cover a super star wide receiver along with all the youngsters. Hopefully Jacobs’ comments get through to upper management, because a move needs to be made. The thought is trading for Davante Adams is said move.
Why This Trade Makes Sense
Let’s first start with why this trade makes sense for all parties involved. Starting with the Packers themselves, this move would give their offense the last push it needs to reach its full potential. Giving Jordan Love a bonified number one receiver could be the secret to unlocking his superstar ability more often. He has shown flashes in his young career, but having a player like Adams would instill confidence into Love. Davante would also be a great role model for a very young receiver room, and could help mentor the guys in the hopes that they are able to elevate their game.
For the Jets, this trade would mark the end of a bittersweet tenure in New Jersey. Playing in just 11 games, Davante Adams was able to record 854 yards and seven touchdowns. The unfortunate part is the Rodgers experiment was an utter failure. Now with the team seemingly moving on from the legendary quarterback, the Jets are left with Tae’s 35 million dollar contract. Finding a way to get something back for him would be a huge win for the franchise.
Last but not least, Davante Adams would benefit greatly if he goes to Green Bay. He would once again be on a competitive playoff team vying for a Super Bowl. After only making the playoffs once with both the Raiders and the Jets, one could only imagine how badly Tae wants to go back to the playoffs. Couple that with the fact that he’s already familiar with coach LaFleur, and some of the other guys, this would be a perfect fit for all parties.
What The Trade Package Would Entail
Seeing as Deebo Samuel just got traded for a fifth round pick, the assumption would be that Adam’s trade would have similar value. The Packers would most likely have to give up a fifth round pick, and possibly another late round pick to secure the deal. This would be pennies on the dollar, purely due to the contract and willingness of Davante Adams’ to play for the Jets in the upcoming season.
In theory, Green Bay would already be able to afford his contract, as they sit with just over 45 million dollars in cap space. It is likely that there will be additional cuts and releases to make room for any extra move that the Packers would make in the offseason as well. This makes the Davante trade both very sensible and feasible for the cheese heads.
End Of My Davante Adams Trade Rant
This mock trade would benefit all sides involved. This could be the Packers chance to finally have another superstar receiver, as they look to compete with the NFC’s top teams next season. If they are able to swing his contract financially, this could be the splash move that sets the Packers up to reclaim the NFC North title. Davante Adams could ironically be Green Bay’s missing piece.
