Although it might seem early to discuss this, with the NBA playoffs still a couple of months away, the anticipation of potential playoff matchups is captivating for any avid NBA fan. The intense, hard-fought seven-game series is what fans of all ages look forward to, and hopefully, they’ll witness some thrilling contests during the 2025 NBA Playoffs.

Eastern Conference Play-In Tournament

Orlando Magic vs Atlanta Hawks is the projected seven and eight seed matchup. In the one regular season matchup between these southeastern teams, Atlanta came out victorious 112 to 106. Young defensive guard Dyson Daniels has ascended to stardom this season for the Hawks. On the other side of this matchup, is Paolo Banchero and the defensively dominant Orlando squad. Expect a defensive low-scoring game with the Magic coming on top.

The matchup between the Miami Heat and the Chicago Bulls is the projected nine and ten seed matchup. In their previous regular-season encounter this season, the Bulls bested the Heat with a score of 133 to 124. Both teams seem to be looking more toward the future than focusing on a deep playoff run this year. Expect Tyler Herro to play a pivotal role in this game. The former Kentucky Wildcat has been impressive this season, averaging 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists on 46 percent shooting. As a first-time NBA All-Star, he has recorded eleven games with 30 or more points this season. Miami will need to step up his scoring, especially with star player Jimmy Butler traded to Golden State. With all that in mind, Miami over Chicago in this play-in matchup.

In this projected second-round matchup of the Eastern Play-In Tournament, the Atlanta Hawks take on the Miami Heat. Atlanta does have the homecourt advantage in this game. Atlanta has already bested this Miami Heat squad once this regular season, 120 to 111. The Hawks were also without the help of young guard Dyson Daniels. Atlanta defeat the Heat and clinch their spot in the 2025 Eastern Conference Playoffs.

Western Conference Play-In Tournament

The 2024 Western Conference Finals rematch features the Timberwolves against the Mavericks, but this time in the Play-In Tournament, projected as the seven and eight seed matchup. This year’s rendition looks quite different from their previous series though. After a blockbuster trade in early February, the Mavericks will be without Luka Dončić. Additionally, Anthony Davis is expected to miss around a month due to an adductor strain, which means he may return by mid-March. This gives the Mavericks with limited time to gel before the playoffs. Given these factors, the Timberwolves are likely to prevail.

Another Northern California showdown is on the horizon, as Sacramento faces Golden State in the nine and ten seed matchup. The teams have a history of eliminating each other over the past two years. Both squads made moves at the trade deadline, bringing in new stars: Jimmy Butler is now in the blue and yellow and Zach LaVine is in purple and gray. The key question is how these players will impact their new teams in such a crucial matchup. The Kings are more likely to come out on top with the help of the new addition of Lavine.

In the upcoming second round of the Western Play-In Tournament, the Mavericks are set to face the Warriors. Both teams, seasoned contenders in the playoffs, aim to secure the eighth seed in this critical matchup. Each squad features a new star, adding excitement and ambition for a potential playoff run. The Mavericks possess a strong front-court presence, especially if Anthony Davis can maintain his health. Max Christie, a player acquired in the Luka trade, adds depth alongside Kyrie Irving and his teammates. While the Mavericks present a significant challenge, the Warriors are poised to claim the eighth seed.
